CaloRings is developed and operated by Weihang Huang, based in Victoria, Australia (“we”, “us”). This policy explains how information is handled by the CaloRings app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, its widgets and complications, and our CaloRings support interactions. Contact: [email protected].
1. Privacy at a glance
You do not need a CaloRings account. Your food library, nutrition and water records are stored on your devices. We do not operate a server that receives your diary. Optional features can send information to Apple services or Open Food Facts, as explained below.
CaloRings contains no advertising, advertising tracking, third-party analytics SDK or third-party crash-reporting SDK. We do not sell personal information, share it for targeted advertising, or use your nutrition records to train AI models.
2. Information stored and processed on your devices
To provide logging, totals, trends and related features, the app stores the information you enter or choose to save, including:
- Foods, brands, barcodes, nutrient values, serving sizes, food images, saved meals and meal components.
- Food and water entries, amounts, dates, times, meal categories and nutrition targets.
- Water presets, scheduled food entries, reminder preferences, display settings and other app preferences.
- Technical record identifiers, synchronization state and purchase-entitlement state used to keep records consistent and enable purchased features.
Nutrition records and personal goal details can reveal health-related information. The app also uses a randomly generated installation identifier to coordinate Health writes and avoid duplicates; it is not an advertising identifier.
If you use personal goal estimates, the app also processes the age, height, weight, equation sex setting, activity level, body goal and pregnancy or breastfeeding status you provide. These profile details are optional and stored locally; the app's iCloud sync does not include them. The resulting nutrition targets can sync if you enable iCloud. You can clear personal details in the goal settings and save the change without deleting your existing targets.
System-level device backups are separate from the app's sync setting and may include local app data, depending on your Apple settings.
3. Optional iCloud sync
When you enable iCloud sync, the app uses Apple's CloudKit service to synchronize supported app records through your private iCloud database. These include foods and saved food images, meals, food and water logs, goals, water presets and supporting schedule and synchronization records. This makes them available to your other supported devices using the same iCloud account. We do not receive a copy on a developer-operated server.
Sync is off by default. Changes to the app's iCloud setting take effect on the next app launch. Turning sync off does not delete records already stored in iCloud or on your devices. Apple processes iCloud data under its own terms and privacy information. Availability and completion depend on your account, connectivity, storage and Apple's services.
4. Optional Apple Health integration
If you enable Health integration and grant permission, CaloRings writes dietary energy, protein, carbohydrates, fat, total sugar and sodium from your food logs to Apple Health. Existing food logs may also be written when you enable this feature. Edits and deletions can update or remove the associated samples when permission and synchronization allow.
The current version does not read your Apple Health records and does not write water-intake records to Apple Health. We do not receive Health data on our servers, and do not use it for advertising, marketing or data brokerage.
You can stop future writes in CaloRings and manage permissions in Apple's Health or system settings. Turning the feature off does not remove samples already in Apple Health. You can manage those records separately in Health. Basic logging remains available without Health permission.
5. Food searches and barcode lookups
Packaged-food searches and barcode lookups connect directly to Open Food Facts. These requests send your submitted search words or barcode, requested language and ordinary connection information, such as your IP address and request headers, to that service. They do not include your diary, nutrition targets, personal goal profile or camera images. Open Food Facts handles requests under its own privacy practices; we do not control its server logs or retention.
Results may be cached on your device to improve performance. Barcode-result caches may remain until the app or operating system clears them. You can use manual entry and the bundled common-food library without making an Open Food Facts request. Bundled common foods are a selected offline dataset based on USDA data; using that library does not make a live USDA request.
See Open Food Facts privacy information and data information.
6. Camera, photos and on-device recognition
Camera access is used when you choose to scan a barcode or nutrition label. The system photo picker gives the app access to the image you select, rather than your whole photo library.
Nutrition-label text recognition takes place on your device. On supported devices and system versions, Apple's on-device language model can assist with interpreting recognized label text. The app does not send label images or recognized text to a developer or third-party AI server. You review the extracted information before saving it. The app does not retain the scanned label image as a saved food photo simply because you scanned it.
If you choose an image as a food icon, a processed copy is saved with that food and can be included in optional iCloud sync. Originals in your Photos library remain under your control.
7. Apple Watch, widgets, reminders and exports
The paired iPhone and Apple Watch exchange daily summaries, goals, units, water presets, water records and synchronization acknowledgements using Apple's WatchConnectivity framework. The Watch can retain pending entries locally until they are delivered. Widgets and complications use locally shared app data. Information displayed on a Lock Screen, watch face or widget may be visible to someone who can see that screen; use the device's privacy and display controls as appropriate.
Reminders are scheduled through local system notifications. We do not operate a marketing push-notification service.
If you export or share food logs, the app creates a file on your device. The file goes to the destination you select through the system share controls, not automatically to us. Saved or shared copies are controlled by you and the recipient or service you choose. Temporary export files may remain until cleared by the app or operating system.
8. Purchases and information you send us
Apple processes Pro purchases and payments. We do not receive your payment-card details. StoreKit provides the app with transaction and entitlement information needed to verify Pro access and show purchase details, including product and transaction identifiers, purchase dates, purchase status and, when available, transaction price and currency. Apple may separately provide sales reports and platform diagnostics under its own policies and your Apple settings. We use any such information available to us for purchase support, accounting and app reliability.
If you email us, we receive your email address, message and any attachments you choose to send. We use them to respond, investigate problems and handle privacy or purchase enquiries. Please avoid sending sensitive health information or full diary exports unless needed for your request. Email providers process correspondence to deliver and store it. We may disclose information we hold when legally required, or where necessary and lawful to protect rights or address security issues.
9. Retention, deletion and your choices
Your saved app records generally remain until you remove them or remove the relevant app storage. Deleting a food entry removes it from the visible diary, but a stored copy marked as deleted may remain to coordinate synchronization and Health updates. Earlier water-preset versions and synchronization receipts may also remain to resolve changes and prevent duplicate or restored entries. Removing an item from view is therefore not a promise of immediate erasure from every copy.
You can edit or delete supported records in the app, clear and save your personal goal profile, turn off optional integrations and revoke permissions in system settings. Removing the app's local data does not by itself remove iCloud copies, Apple Health records, exports, device backups or all system-managed credentials. For a broader removal, review each of those locations separately and your other synced devices. Contact us for help identifying the relevant controls. There is no CaloRings account to close, and we cannot remotely retrieve or erase a diary held only on your devices or in your private iCloud storage.
We retain support correspondence only as long as reasonably needed to resolve and follow up the request, meet legal recordkeeping duties or deal with a dispute. Applicable statutory periods and the nature of the request determine that period. You can ask us to delete information we hold, subject to lawful retention requirements. Apple and Open Food Facts determine retention of information they independently process.
10. Legal grounds, international processing and rights
Where a legal basis is required, information necessary to provide the features you request and purchase support is processed to perform our agreement with you; support administration and security may rely on our legitimate interests, subject to your rights; legally required records rely on legal obligations. Optional permissions and consent apply where required. We do not treat use of the app or acceptance of this policy as blanket consent to unrelated processing of sensitive data. You may withdraw consent for optional processing without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal.
Apple, Open Food Facts and email providers may process information outside your country. Their privacy information describes their own arrangements. We are based in Australia and handle correspondence you send us there; any international processing for which we are responsible must follow applicable transfer requirements. We do not promise that all information remains in a single country.
Depending on the laws that apply to you, you may have rights to access, correct, delete or obtain a copy of information, restrict or object to processing, withdraw consent, and complain to a relevant privacy authority. Contact us to exercise those rights concerning information we hold. We may request proportionate verification and will respond within applicable legal time limits. A legal privacy request is not conditional on buying Pro. Local app data is primarily managed through your own devices; we can explain those controls without asking you to send us your diary.
11. Younger users
CaloRings is a general-audience app and is not specifically directed at children. We do not seek children's personal information for advertising or build marketing profiles. Parents and guardians should help younger users choose appropriate settings and permissions. The automatic goal estimator has its own adult eligibility limits and is not a children's nutrition-planning tool. If a child has sent personal information to our support address, a parent or guardian can contact us to request its deletion, subject to applicable law.
12. Security, website and changes
We use platform storage protections and secure network connections where supported, but no device or transmission method is completely secure. Protect your devices and Apple Account, and take care when sharing exports or screenshots.
This policy describes CaloRings, not unrelated apps operated by the same developer. The CaloRings information pages are static pages without developer-added advertising, analytics or contact forms. Serving a page still involves ordinary connection information handled by the hosting provider; this is distinct from the app's local diary. This policy does not claim that a website visit creates no server logs. Other websites linked from these pages have their own practices.
We may update this policy when the app or our practices change. We will update the date and provide additional notice or obtain consent where legally required. A policy update alone does not authorize a new use of sensitive information.
